Question 937768: I do my home work on khanacademy.org and I am doing Pythagorean Theorem. It keeps giving me problems that show a right triangle with two side lengths and I have to find the third length and answer it like this, for example: It shows me how I got it wrong but I don't understand how they get the answer so they gave me a triangle that has one leg as "a", another as 5, and the hypotenuse as 9. I put it into an equation of and then subtracted 25 from both sides and got and then I did the factor tree with the square root of 56 and had 2 * 24 and then from 24 I had 2 * 12 and then from 12 I had 2 * 6 and from 6 I had 3 * 2. After that I put the answer in as but it said it was wrong and told me the answer was but I don't understand how they got that and also why that is the answer. Please help me understand and thank you for your using your time to help me.

Question 942364: I have a question on the way to find the sides of an isosceles right triangle with a hypotenuse that is radical 72.
I solved the question
"Determine the perimeter of a square with a diagonal of radical 72 centimeters"
To find the perimeter I musty first find the length of the side of the square
Then I set up and equation and turn a segment the square into a triangle using the diagonal as the hypotenuse
I then simplified the equation
I divided by 2
And I found the square roots
I then found the perimeter by multiplying 4 by the value of x
P=26
Instructor comment: When you draw the diagonal through the square, you create a 45-45-90 triangle, where the hypotenuse is radical 72; then you can use those patterns to find the side length of the square to use to find the perimeter.
Please show me the correct way to solve it

Question 946204: 1: To get from point A to point B you must avoid walking through a pond. To avoid the pond, you must walk 34 meters south and 41 meters east. To the nearest hundreth of a meter, how many meters would be saved if it were possible to walk through the pond?
21.74
34
53.26
75
Could someone show how this problems works? I have tried
34 squared plus 41 squared equals C squared
1156 plus 1681 equals C squared
2837 equals C squared
C equals 53.26

Question 948721: The long side of a right triangle is 5.0 m long. if the hypotenuse is three times the length of the short side, find the short side and the hypotenuse of a right triangle. set up and solve a quadratic equation using the Pythagorean formula.
so this what i tried to solve
Pythagorean formula: a^2+b^=c^
I do not know the short side so i used x and 3x for hyp.
Then solve as
(x)^2+(5.0)^2=(3x)^2
x^2+25=9x^2
Now i do not know how to finish solving the equation.
