From first base to third base on a baseball diamond is actually the hyptenuse of a right triangle with right angle at second base! Therefore, the legs of the right triangle are each 90 feet, and the hypotenuse is the direct distance (over the pitcher's mound) from first to third base. By the Theorem of Pythagoras, this would be

90%5E2+%2B+90%5E2+=+x%5E2
+8100+%2B+8100+=+x%5E2
x%5E2+=+2%2A8100
x+=+sqrt%288100%29%2Asqrt%282%29+
