Question 855777: I would like some assistance(explanation too) on the Pythagorean Theorem.
My word problem is as follows:
On one zipline in a canopy tour in Costa Rica, riders drop 58ft. while covering a distance of 840 ft. along the ground. How long is the zip line. I drew my diagram.
a^2+b^2=(x)^2
58^2+840^2= (x)^2
3364+705600=708964
708964=(x)^2
This is the point I got lost. I have no clue what do next, let alone how to find the square root. May I please get some assistance?
Thanks in advance for your most valuable input. Found 2 solutions by stanbon, Alan3354:Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! I would like some assistance(explanation too) on the Pythagorean Theorem.

-------
58^2+840^2= (x)^2
3364+705600=708964
708964=(x)^2
x = 842 ft.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 708964=(x)^2
The parentheses don't hurt, but they don't contribute anything.
x^2 = 708964
Then use a calculator.
x = 842
