SOLUTION: A right triangle has an area of 60 ft(squared) and hypotenuse 17 ft. long. What are the lengths of its other two sides?
So we know that:
x * y = 120
and
x(squared) +

Question 823735: A right triangle has an area of 60 ft(squared) and hypotenuse 17 ft. long. What are the lengths of its other two sides?
So we know that:
x * y = 120
and
x(squared) + y (squared) = 17 (squared)
but if I substitute y = 120/x into the second equation, it quickly becomes crazy. I have to multiply both sides by x (squared) to eliminate the fraction, and now I've got x to the 4th power to deal with and I get stuck. Answer by oscargut(2103) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Take u = x squared
Then
u + 120 squared / u = 17(squared)
