Question 70816This question is from textbook Looking for pythagoras
: Lotsafun Amusement Park has a new ride, th Sky Breaker. The starting and ending points of the ride are seperated by 1000 meters. The tram cars glide along a cable that rises at a 45 degree angle from the ground until it reaches a height of 15 meters. The cable runs parallel to the ground for most of the ride, eventually sloping down again at a 45 degree angle with the ground. How long to the nearesttenth of a meter, is the cable for the Sky Breaker ride? This question is from textbook Looking for pythagoras

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Draw the picture of the cable path.
To travel the first 15 horizontal distance the cable travels 15sqrt2 meters
because the cable car follows the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs
equal to 15 meters.
To travel the last 15 horizontal distance the cable travels 15sqrt2 meters
for the same reason
--------------.
The horizontal part of the path is 1000-2(15)=970 meters
Total path = 970+2(15sqrt2) = 970+30sqrt2 = 970+42.4264 = 1012.4264 meters
------------
