Question 619429: thank you for your assitance-- i have had a llittle trouble in firguring out these type pythagoreum problems-- i am in my math book from school--i am older soon returning to school- so again thank you for saving me time from sitting here all day, literally trying to guess!! (charuethornhill@att.net) thank you again.
ok it says: there are two vertical poles of length 6 feet and 8feet stand 10 feet apart. a cable reaches from the top of one pole to some point on the ground between the poles and then to the top of the other pole. where should this point be located use 18 feet cable, the answers are 1.2 feet or 7.5 feet, i am aware of the P thereom thing, but still cannot figure out what going to produce 1,2 or 7.,5 thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the 18 ft of cable is the sum of the two hypotenuses of the triangles formed when the cable is strung

if the cable is anchored x ft from the 6 ft pole ___ sqrt(6^2 + x^2) + sqrt[8^2 + (10 - x)^2] = 18

rather than solving this formidable equation; I would suggest substituting the choices to find the solution(s)
___ there may be more than one

also; since the question didn't specify the location, you may be looking for 10-x rather than x

good luck going back to school
