: I am taking pre-algebra, but I am learning the Pythagorean theorem. The question I have is there is a right tringle with 55 ft. on one side and 30 ft. on the other I am trying to find the hypotenuse. I have tried by multiplying 55 times 55 and 30 bye 30 to get an answer and square but I cant seem to get it right. This question is from textbook Basic Concepts

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The Pythagorean theorem states, algebraically:
c%5E2+=+a%5E2+%2B+b%5E2 Where c is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle and a & b are the lengths of the other two sides.
In your problem, a = 55 ft., b = 30 ft, and you want to find c, the length of the hypotenuse, c.
c%5E2+=+55%5E2+%2B+30%5E2
c%5E2+=+3025+%2B+900
c%5E2+=+3925 Now take the square root of both sides.
c+=+62.65 ft. (Approximately)
