First, we realize we are working with a 90 degree triangle, with the angle of the pole and ground 90 degrees.
Next, we set up a sine function, for the top angle, opp / hypotenuse, this comes to .5 for an angle of 30 degrees.
we can know use the cosine function to find the height of the pole cos 30 = adj/40.
This worked out to 34.64 feet. This is our answer.

A wire from the top of a telephone pole to a point on the ground 20m from the pole is 40m long.how high is the pole?

Let the height of the pole be H
The base of the right triangle formed is 20m
The wire represents the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed, and is 40m long

We then have:

H%5E2+%2B+20%5E2+=+40%5E2
H%5E2+=+40%5E2+-+20%5E2
H%5E2 = 1,200
H, or height = sqrt%281200%29 = highlight_green%2834.64%29, to the nearest hundredths.
