Question 418478: using the pythagorean theorem formula
two trains leave the same city at the same time. one heads dues west and one due noth one train travels 5 miles per hour faster than the other. After 2 hours they are 50 miles apart. Find the speed of each train.
so far i have (2r)^2+ (2r+10)^2=50^2 Answer by dnanos(83) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x the one speed and x+5 the speed of the other train...
Multiply each speed with the time (2 hours)related to it to obtain the miles they have done.
Then we use the Pythagorean theorem.
divide by 8
Use the formula for a=1,b=5,c=-300
to obtain OR
We get
omit the negative solution as non geometrical
x=30/2
x=15 is the first speed.
and 15+5=20 the other.
