If you make a sketch, you will see a right angled triangle.



The hypotenuse of this right angled triangle is the radius of the circle and has the length of 5 centimeters.


One leg if this triangle is the perpendicular from the center ofthe circle to the chord. It is 4 centimeters long.


Since the hypotenuse is 5 cm and one leg is 4 cm (given), then the other leg is 3 cm long  (3-4-5 right angled triangle !)


This perpendiculr bicects the chord.  Hence, the chord total length is 6 centimeters.
