Question 1045071: How do you show all workings rather than substitution to
calculate x where the hypotenuse is x+8 and the other sides
are x and x+7 ? Answer by Edwin McCravy(20055) (Show Source):
Use FOIL:
Get 0 on the left by subtracting the whole left
side from the right side:
Factor the right side
Use the zero-factor property:
x-5 = 0; x+3=0
x = 5; x=-3
x is one of the sides, so it can't be negative,
so we discard the -3 and the answer is
x = 5
