Question 943566: A donkey must transport 900 carrots to the market, which is 300 miles away. The donkey carries a maximum of 300 carrots, and eats 1 carrot every mile. What is the largest number of carrots that can be delivered to the market?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The donkey takes his first full load 75 miles, leaves 150 there and returns to start. He has traveled 150 miles total thus he has eaten 150 carrots, with 150 at the 75 mile point. He takes another 300 carrots, and at he 75 mile mark picks up 75 carrots and continues to the 150 mile mark, where he drops 150 carrots and has 75 remaining to return to the 75 mile mark. There he picks up 75 carrots, enough to return to the start, where he picks up the final 300 lbs of carrots. when he arrives at the 150 mile mark, he has eaten 150 carrots from his full load and can pick up the 150 carrots there. He once more has 300 carrots, and during the 150 miles left to market, he eats 150 of them to leave 150 carrots of the total that get to market. I accidentally posted a blank response to this problem when I had trouble coming up with a mathematical answer. If this response is insufficient, please post again and perhaps another tutor can benefit you more.
