Basic Idea


<1 and <2 form a linear pair ... given
<2 and <3 are supplementary ... given


<1 + <2 = 180 ... angles 1 and 2 are a linear pair (adjacent and supplementary)
<2 + <3 = 180 ... see line 2 above


<1 - <3 = 180 - 180 ... subtract the two equations above
<1 - <3 = 0 ... subtract 180 - 180 to get 0
<1 = <3 ... Add <3 to both sides


This isn't the formal proof, but it gives you an idea of how to do it.
