The other number be y.
x+y =14
3x+2y=34
multiply the top equation by (-3). Note, you could multiply the top by -2 and eliminate the y, getting the same answer.
-3x -3y=-42 (3*14)
3x +2y =34
Add the two. The x values disappear
-y=-8; y=8
x+8=14
x=6
Smaller number is 6, larger is 8. They add to 14.
Twice the larger number (2*8=16) + (3 *6=18), 3 times the smaller number, is 34.
