Question 873722: Hi, If anyone could help with show me where I have gone wrong in this question it would be greatly appreciated...
THE QUESTION
It is estimated that 723,165 children were born in the UK in 2010. The population of the UK at that time was approximately 62 million, and the number of people living in Sheffield was around 555,000. Assuming that Sheffield is typical of places in the UK, and that births are equally likely to occur on any day of the year, what is the probability that exactly 20 children were born in Sheffield on 6th June 2010? Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
MY WORKING
Firstly I decided to get the percentage of babies born out of the total population so I did 723,165/62,000,000
I then multiplied this percentage by the population in Sheffield to get the population of babies born in sheffield which came out as 6473
I then did the 20/6473 and multiplied by 1/365... The probability was a lot smaller than expected as it came out as 0.0008% so I'm sure I have got it wrong, but I cant figure out where... Help please
