I believe this would definitely be an experimental study.

The reason is that the researchers would be directly influencing the subjects,

and then sorting them into non-random groups.

Observational studies on the other hand,

never directly influence the subjects.

Researchers just observe what is already happening in nature, or in the field, and even in the laboratory.

Experimental studies can have huge ethical implications, especially when the subjects are humans or animals.
