I. DNA of children (y) depends on DNA of parents (x)

II. Gas consumption (y) depends on Miles driven (x)

III. Blood alcohol level (y) depends on Alcohol consumption (x)

IV. Average annual snowfall (y) depends on Geographic location (x)


In each case, x is independent and y is dependent. Basically changing x changes y in some fashion (but not necessarily the other way around)
