So my thoughts were the prime numbers are 1,2,3,5,7,11 and there are 12 possibilities so the answer should be 1/2. But the answer given to me is 5/12. What am I missing?

1 is not a prime number. If it were prime, then any "prime number" such as 3 could be expressed as the product of two or more primes (3*1, 3*1*1, etc.) and therefore wouldn't be prime.

Therefore the probability is 5/12.
