Question 578138: In an experiment to study the relationship of hypertention and smoking habits, the following data are collected for 180 individuals:
Nonsmokers Moderate smokers Heavysmkr
Hypertension 21 36 30
Nonhypertention 48 26 19
If one of these individuals is selected at random, find the probability that the person is

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In an experiment to study the relationship of hypertention and smoking habits, the following data are collected for 180 individuals:
Nonsmokers Moderate smokers Heavysmkr
Hypertension 21 36 30
Nonhypertention 48 26 19
If one of these individuals is selected at random, find the probability that the person is:
a) experiencing hypertention, given that the person is a heavy smoker
Ans: 30/(21+36+30) = 30/87
---------------------------------
b) a nonsmoker, given that the person is experiencing no hypertention
Ans: 48/(48+26+19) = 48/93

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a) Experiencing hypertension given that the person is a heavy smoker.
We already know that the person is a heavy smoker. We simply need to know if she/he is experiencing hypertension.
Number of heavy smokers having hypertension is 30
Number of all heavy smokers (including hypertension free) is 49
Answer = %28Heavy+_smokers_+with_+hyper%29%2F%28All_+heavy_+smokers%29
= %2830%29%2F%2849%29
b) A non smoker given that the person is experiencing no hypertension.
We already know that the person does not have hypertension. We only want to be certain if he/she is a non smoker.
Number of Non smokers without hypertension is 48
Number of people who do not have hypertension (whether they smoke or not)=93
Answer = %28Non_smokers_with_no_hypertension%29%2F%28everyone+_with_+no+_hypertension%29
= %2848%29%2F%2893%29
