Two balls are to be selected without replacement from a bag containing one red, one blue, one green, and one yellow ball. How many points are there in the sample space?

The sample space is simply the set of ALL possible outcomes.


Let r=red ball, b=blue ball, g=green ball, and y=yellow ball


Here's the sample space

{r, b}
{r, g}
{r, y}
{b, r}
{b, g}
{b, y}
{g, r}
{g, b}
{g, y}
{y, r}
{y, b}
{y, g}

Note: {y, r} means that you selected a yellow ball followed by a red ball


Now just count up all of the individual possibilities to get 12. So there are 12 points in the sample space. In other words, there are 12 different possible ways to select two balls (without replacement).


Note: you have 4 choices for the first selection and then 3 choices for the second giving you 4*3=12 choices total. If you understand the method explained above, then this shortcut will really help.
