Since the first 3 digits are defined, you can only vary the last 5 digits. Five digits can make 00000 through 99999, inclusive. This is 100000 patterns. Since only the 3 patterns 887,888, and 889 are allowed for the first 3 digits, there are 3*100000 = 300000 numbers.
