Question 1004832: Dear tutor, please help me with the question below.
Q.Draw a normal distribution and identify the mean of x on the distribution. Discuss the symmetry and the total area under the curve. What is the probability that a value of x will be greater than the mean?
- I understand how to draw and the symmetry of a normal distribution. but i am not sure about the last question. I assume the probability that a value of x will be grater than the mean is above z score 0?
Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you. Found 2 solutions by rothauserc, MathLover1:Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The mean of the normal distribution determines the location of the center of the graph. That is, 50% of the values lie below the mean and 50% of the values lie above the mean. Therefore, the probability that a value of x will be greater than the mean is 0.50.
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The Normal Distribution has:
mean = median = mode
symmetry about the center % of values less than the mean
and % greater than the mean
The number of standard deviations from the mean is also called the "Standard Score", "sigma" or "z-score".
So to convert a value to a Standard Score ("z-score"):
first subtract the mean,
then divide by the Standard Deviation
And doing that is called "Standardizing":
