When asked to multiply polynomials, use the FOIL pattern. F First Multiply the first terms of each binomial. O Outer Multiply the outer terms: the first term of the first binomial and the second term or the second binomial. I Inner Multiply the inner terms: the second term of the first binomial and the first term of the second binomial. L Last Multiply the second terms of each binomial. Example: (-2x-4)(8x+3) Solution: (-2x-4)(8x+3) (-2x)(3)= -6x (-2x)(8x)= -18x^2 (-4)(3)= -12 (-4)(8x)= -32x Now, add like terms. -16x^2-38x+12
