Question 633980: You are part of a committee looking at building a border around a circular pool of radius of 20 feet. The condominium board is thinking of a 5-foot border costing about $5000 but is willing to go wider or narrower (with good reason) or to spend more or less (with good reason). You are to use polynomials to analyze the cost of building a border with different widths made from different materials.

The first task is to develop a polynomial for the area of the border. Let x represent the width of the border and determine a polynomial for the border area. It helps to draw a picture first. Because the pool is circular, you can expect toderive the area from the formula for the area of a circle.

Once you have the area formula, you next develop polynomials for the cost of building the border. Cement is just a cost per square foot. Brick is a cost per square foot plus a fixed delivery charge. Carpet is a cost per saure foot plus a charge for edging that will involve the circumference of the border.

Your task for project part I is to use these polynomials to develop a table showing the cost of building the border with each material for five different widths.
