A corner lot that originally was square lost 185 m^2 of area when one of the adjacent streets was widened by 3 m and the other was widened by 5 m. Find the new dimensions of the lot. (Hint: Let x= the length of a side of the origanal square lot.)

36m^2 -9 = 40
36m^2 -9 +9 = 40+9
36m^2 + 0 = 49
36m^2=49
36m^2/36= 49/36
m^2= 49/36
sqr (m^2) = sqr (49/36)
m= 7/6 or m=-7/6
note when you take square root of number you have two solutions a positive and negative....because remember (-7/6)(-7/6)=49/36

Question 162320: find the real solution to the equation 9x^2=30x-25 let u=x^2
i substitute u for x^2 so I get 9u but then do I make 30x square root of 30x and move it and 25 to the other side of the equation after that? or use the power principle? confused thank you

Question 162413: I am trying to simplify 2 fraction problems with variables and exponents, probably using factoring, but depite all the factoring I have tried, my answers don't come up with common denominators, so the numbers don't combine. Here is the first problem:
yx^2/(x-y)+xy^3/(xy-x^2)
This is the second:
1/(a^2+b^2)+1/(a^2-b^2)+2b^2/(a^4-b^4)

Question 162590: one moreee the biggest problem i have is word problems i hate them and i get frustrated heres one i'm really struggling with.
a board is cut into two pieces. one piece is to be three times as long as the other. if the board is 4.2m long, what will the length of the longer piece be?
i have to have a let statement i tried putting..
let x represent 1 piece
let x+3 reprsent the other piece
so i put the equation as..
2x+3=4.2
but the number is so small i find it hard to believe it correct! can you show me what im doing wrong?
