simplifying by removing the parenthesis and combining Like terms

(7m^2-20)-(4m^2-4)   |both parenthesis in this example have a coefficient of 1

1*(7m^2-20)-1*(4m^2-4)

 7m^2 - 20 - 4m^2 + 4   |combining Like terms

   3m^2 - 16
