expand the bracket and ten get everything on one side, so it all equals zero:

x%5E2+-+2x+=+48
x%5E2+-+2x+-+48+=+0

Now try factorising, since having 2 things that multiply together that equal zero is very useful to know, since one of those 2 things must itself be zero.

(x+6)(x-8) = 0
so, either x+6=0 OR x-8=0
so we get that either x=-6 or x=8
