Question 327570: I need help answering this word problem. If the sides of a square are lengthened by 7cm, the area becomes 196cm^2. Find the length of a side of the original square.
I also need help with another problem. Find the vertex, the line symmetry, the max or minium value & graph. f(x)=1over5 (fraction)(x+2)^2+2
If you could help me, that would be really appreciated.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the side of the square equal s.
%28s%2B7%29%5E2=196
s%2B7=14
highlight%28s=7%29

.
The equation is in vertex form, y=a%28x-h%29%5E2%2Bk where (h,k) is the vertex.
Comparing,
Vertex : (-2,2)
The vertex lies on the axis of symmetry, x=-2.
The coefficient of x%5E2 term is positive so the parabola opens upwards and the value at the vertex is the minimum of the function.
ymin=2
