Question 274260: Is any of these a polynomial, if so state the degree ?
1. x2(exponent)+2x+2
2. b2(exponent)c /(fraction bar)d4(exponent)
3. 8xz+1/2y Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
Use the caret mark, (Shift-6, "^"), to indicate exponentiation.
1. x^2 + 2x + 2 means
2. (b^2c)/(d^4) means
3. 8xz + 1/2y means
In which case 3 is a polynomial of degree 2. (The degree of in the first term is 1 and the degree of in the first term is 1, but the degree of the term is the sum of the degrees of all of the variables in the term, so 1 + 1 = 2.)
But
8xz + 1/(2y) means and this is NOT a polynomial.
