There are 2 ways the couple can sit, the husband on the left of his wife, or the
wife on the left of her husband.

For each of those 2 ways to arrange the husband and wife, there are 4 things to
arrange, 3 single people and 1 couple. These 4 things can be arranged in 4! = 24
ways.  

Answer: 2x24 = 48 ways.
