Hi, there--

THE PROBLEM:
Space shuttle astronauts each consume an average of 3000 calories per day. One meal consists of 1main dish, 1 vegetable, and two different desserts. The astronauts can choose from 10 main dishes, 5 vegetables, and 12 desserts. How many different meals are possible?

A SOLUTION:

There are 10 ways to choose a main dish.
There are 5 ways to choose a vegetable.
There are 12 ways to choose the first dessert.
There are 11 ways to choose the second dessert.

We multiply 10 * 5 * 12 * 11 = 6600

There are 6,600 different meals possible.

Hope this helps! Feel free to email if you have any questions about the solution.

Good luck with your math,
