Question 250716: In a 9 team league where everyone plays each other once, I figured there would be 36 games total. Was I correct? But I did not use an equation, I drew it out. What is the simple way to figure the number of games played regardless of the number of teams? Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! There are 9 teams and each team must play at least 8 games each. So that would make you think there are at least 72 games. But we only need one of AB and BA.
So we have
9!
over (9-2)! 2!
9!
over 7!*2!
which works out to be 9*8/2=36
