A store received a shipment of stuffed animals. The stockperson placed 1/5 of them on the shelves, leaving 280 of them in storage. How many of the items were in the shipment?

Let n be the answer.

If one fifth of the n animals are placed on the shelves, then the
other four fifths of the n animals must be those remaining 280.

So we ask

4/5 ths of what equals 280?

4/5 ths of n equals 280

or

%284%2F5%29n=280

Multiply both sides by 5

4n=1400

Divide both sides by 4

n=350

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x-x/5=280
(5x-x)/5=280
4x=280*5
4x=1,400
x=1,400/4
x=350 ans. for the total stuffed animals.
Proof:
350-350/5=280
350-70=280
280=280
