I am working with word problems that contain fractions and am not sure how to solve the following problem:
A respiratory therapy class consists of 24 men and 36 women. What fraction of the class are men? Please answer as a fraction reduced to lowest terms.
I tried to add the two numbers together and reduce but the answer did not make sense. I am not sure what information is important and what is not. Thank you for your time.

A farmer brings a 300 pound watermelon to market. Unbeknownst to the farmer, two months ago this village passed a ban on the purchase of watermelons, and so it just sits out all day in the sun without anybody buying it. During this rather hot day, some of the water in the watermelon evaporates, so that by the time she packs up her wares to go home, the water has dropped from comprising 99 percent of the total fruit down to constituting 98 percent.
