Let them each have earned x times.
Each time the first boy earns $5, so in x times he earns 5*x.
For the same number of times, the second boy earns 7*x.
Together they earn 5*x + 7*x which is given to be 240.
So, 12*x = 240 or x = 20. Each had 20 earnings.
Boy 1 earned 5*20 = highlight%28100%29 dollars.
Boy 2 earned 7*20 = highlight%28140%29 dollars.
Check: Total = 100 + 140 = 240. Correct!
