Question 707997: I tend to have a hard time with word problems. This problem seems easy but I need a bit of help with step by step solving for later problems.
Shoes cost $20 per pair and boots cost $60 per pair. Arlene and Jerry spent $8000 and bought 3 times as many boots as shoes. How many pairs of each did they buy?
Thanks for the help

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = number of pairs of shoes bought
3x= number of pairs of boots bought
$20x= amount spent on shoes
$60%283x%29=180x= amount spent on boots
20x%2B180x=8000 --> 200x=8000 --> 200x%2F200=8000%2F200 --> highlight%28x=40%29 --> highlight%283x=120%29
They bought highlight%2840%29 pairs of shoes and highlight%28120%29 pairs of boots.
