Luke raises rabbits and raccoons to sell for meat. The price of raccoon meat is three times the price of rabbit meat. One day Luke sold 160 pounds of meat, $72 worth of each type. What is the price per pound of each type of meat? This question is from textbook algebra for college students
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Assume that the price of rabbit meat is x dollars per pound
Then the price of raccoon meat will be 3x dollars per pound
$72 can buy 72/x pounds of rabbit meat and 72/(3x) pounds of raccoon meat
72/x + 72/(3x) = 160 (because total weight of the meat is 160 pounds)
=>(1/x)[72+72/3]=160
=>(1/x)[72+24]=160
=>(1/x)(96)=160
=>1/x=160/96=5/3
=>x=3/5=.60 cents per pound
Price of rabbit meat is $.60 per pound
The price of raccoon meat is 3(.60)=$1.80 per pound
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let "x" be the price per pound and "y" be the number of pounds of rabbit meat. Then the value of the rabbit meat is xy=$72
"3x" is the price per pound and "160-y" is the number of pounds of raccoon
meat. Then the value of the raccoon meat is (3x)(160-y)=72
SOLVE the system using SUBSTITUTION:
If xy=72 then y=72/x
Then the 2nd equation can be written as:
3x[160-(72/x)]=72
480x-216=72
480x=288
x=$0.60 (price per pound of rabbit meat)
3x=$1.80 (price per pound of raccoon meat)
