Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! she spent 38 dollars on a bag and 674 dollars on a pair of shoes for a total of 712 dollars.
after she spent that money, she had 2/5 of her money left.
let x = the amount of money she started out with.
then x - 712 = 2/5 * x
subtract 2/5 * x from both sides of that equation and add 712 to both sides of that equation to get:
x - 2/5 * x = 712
combine like terms to get 3/5 * x = 712
solve for x to get x = 5/3 * 712 = 1186.66666667.
that's how much money she had at first.
she spent 38 + 674 = 712.
1186.66666667 - 712 =
474.66666667 / 1186.66666667 = .4 = 2/5.
she spent 3/5 of her money and she had 2/5 left.
she had 1186.66666667 dollars at first.
it didn't come out even, but that's because the problem wasn't set up so the money would come out even.
if the total amount of money she spent was 711 or 714, then it would have come out even.
assuming the total spent was 711, then:
x - 711 = 2/5 * x
subtract 2/5 * x from both sides of the equation and add 711 to both sides of the equation to get:
3/5 * x = 711
solve for x to get x = 711 / (3/5) = 1185.
assuming the total spent was 74, then:
x = 714 = 2/5 * x
subtract 2/5 * x from both sides of the equation and add 714 to both sides of the equation to get:
3/5 * x = 714
solve for x to get x = 714 / (3/5) 1190.
but, that's not the way the problem was set up, so.....
your solution is that minah had 1186 and 2/3 dollars to start with.
that's not very realistic, but that's the way it came out.
