: A college increased it's student population by 6.72% over last fall. They
now have 270 students. what is the original number of
students? Use the formula changePC= [original-new]/original X 100
6.72 = {x-270}/x X 100(please note I'm using brackets to denote absolute value
Multiply each side by 100
0.0672= 100x-2700/x
Multiply each side by x,
.0672x = 100x squared -2700x

Answer by Fombitz(32388) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Divide both sides by 100. You said multiply and you divided on the left and multiplied on the right.
Multiply both sides by x. You lost your x in the denominator from your original equation that would cancel out when you multiplied by x.
From your discussion you know the change was an increase. So you know that x is less than 270, the absolute value of (x-270) is negative, so
and
Check your answer
(270-253)/253=.0672
.0672=.0672
Good answer.
x=289.45
Since it is a student count the number must be an integer.
x=289 students
