Question 685560: The problem ask how many miles are ran on two days. First day is 8 3/4 mi. Second day is 7 1/5 mi. I am trying to show my daughter how to compute this. We made the fraction into a mixed number by multiplying and adding to get HESE8 3/4 + 27/4 and 7 1/5 = 36/5. THEN WE ADDED THESE BY FINDING A COMMON DENOMINATOR. 20 SO IT BECOMES 144/20 + 135/20= 279/20 SIMPLIFIED TO 13 16/20. THEY GIVE THE ANSWER AND WANT IT TO THE NEAREST MILE. THE ANSWER IS 16. WHAT DID WE DO WRONG? THANKS

Question 686125: :Louise read 5\8ths of the pages in her book, then read 18 more pages and found that she had 1/3 of the pages left, how many pages are in her book.
Wouldn't it be 5/8x + 18 = 1/3x to figure if out. Been a while for me. Lol

Question 686239: the sum of two fractions is 1. if one fractions is 3/8 greater than the other, what are the two fractions? If I take 8/8 - 3/8 = 5/8 and that equals 1 but how is that 3/8 greater than the other? It isn't right? Please help me show my work.

2) Jim walked 3/8 mile to the grocery store 5/6 mile from there to the post office 1/3 mile back home. How far did he walk? (37/24 miles)
3) John had 2/3 gallon of milk used 3/8 of it. How much was used? (1/4 gallon)
