Question 98191: Please kindly help me with this word problem. I am having difficulty solving it.
1. A guy wire of length 50 feet is attached to the ground and to the top of an antenna. The height of the antenna is 10 feet larger than the distance from the base of the antenna to the point where the guy wire is attached to the ground. What is the height of the antenna?
Also I am having a problem factoring this problem. How can I factor
10a^2 + ab - 2b^2
Thank you kindly for the help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
WHAT YOU HAVE IS A RIGHT TRIANGLE WITH AN HYPOTENUSE=50, A BASE =X & A HEIGHT=X+10.
USING THE PYTHAGOREON THEORUM WE GET x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28+b%5E2-4%2Aa%2Ac+%29%29%2F%282%2Aa%29+
X^2+(X+10)^2=50^2
X^2+X^2+20X+100=2500
2X^2+20X+100-2500=0
2X^2+20X-2400=0
2(X^2+10X-1200)=0
2(X-30)(X+40)=0
X-30=0
X=30 ANSWER.
THEREFORE THE HEIGHT OF THE ANTENNA IS 30+10=40 FEET TALL.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
10A^2+AB-2B^2=0
(5A-2B)(2A+B)=0 ANSWER.
