once you explain it i'll most likely remember (: thank you! Found 2 solutions by geetha_rama, jim_thompson5910:Answer by geetha_rama(94) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! We need to take the lcm of the denominator and solve as below
3/4 - 2/3 +1/2 +1/3
Lcm is 12
=>
=>
=> 11/12
So for instance, adding 1/2 + 2/3 cannot be done just yet because the denominators are different (2 and 3).
They must be the same number for us to continue. What we can do is notice that the LCM of 2 and 3 is 6 (2*3 = 6). So this means the LCD, lowest common denominator, is 6.
Now multiply 1/2 by 3/3 to get (1/2)*(3/3) = 3/6
and multiply 2/3 by 2/2 to get (2/3)*(2/2) = 4/6
Notice how we now have 2 fractions that have a denominator of 6
we have gone from
1/2 + 2/3
to
3/6 + 4/6
Now we can finally add. We add only the numerators and do NOT change or alter the denominators.
The same rules apply with subtracting fractions. The denominators have to be the same before you can subtract the numerators (and you do NOT change the denominator).
