Using a calculator, we see that 27/17 = 1.58823529411764

Notice how the number to the left of the decimal point is a "1"

So that means that 17 goes into 27 one whole time. Basically the quotient is 1.

So 1*17 = 17. Then we subtract off that result from 27 to get 27 - 1*17 = 27 - 17 = 10

The remainder is 10.
