A very simple example, extremely simple:

Raising to a power.
3%5E4=+3%2A3%2A3%2A3=9%2A9=81.

Taking a root:
sqrt%2836%29=sqrt%286%2A6%29=6.
The "two" root. Called the "square" root.

Back to the 81, you could find the fourth root of 81 and this will be 3.
root%284%2C81%29=3.
