You want just to factor the expression. three terms using x, one term using y, one term using both x and y. Not so clear until you see that two terms have x to power 1 and two OTHER terms have y to power 1.

4x+2x+xy+y
2x(2+1)+xy+y
6x+xy+y...
Not really worth any factoring. Even from the beginning, you would want to combine the two first terms having just the x variable:

NO factoring....
