Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction (e.g. 4 1/3 = 13/3). Before you add, make sure the fractions have the same denominator. If so, simply add (or subtract). If not, find the LCM and rewrite the fractions as necessary, then add or subtract.

Pauline wants to make cookies for her children. She has all the necessary ingredients but fear that she doesn't have enough flour to bake them. She checks and realizes that she has a bag with 7%261%2F2 lbs of flour, and another bag with 4%261%2F2 lbs of flour. How many lbs of flour, in all does she have to bake the cookies?

Since she has 7%261%2F2 lbs and 4%261%2F2 lbs, we need to add the 2 amounts to see how many lbs, in total she has

Change each mixed number's fraction into a fraction with the same denominator. In this case, the denominators are the same so no changes are necessary

..7%261%2F2

+4%261%2F2

Adding the two mixed numbers with the same denominator gives us 11%262%2F2, or 11 + 1, or 24%2F2, or highlight_green%2812%29
