       5/9 + 8/9 

Since the denominators are both the same, 9, you
just add the numerators and put that over 9.

       5/9 + 8/9

Add 5+8 and get 13. Then put 13 over 9 to get

         13/9

Now change that to a mixed number. 9 goes into
13 1 time with a remainder of 4, so the answer
is

        1 4/9 which is C
