Question 366514: I am taking classes with the University of Phoenix and this semester I have algebra. The problems is. -2/7x=6/35. I know that you need to multiply both sides by -7/2, and I know that the answer should be -42/70, but they want me to simplify the answer and I just don't undersand where this magical number is supposed to come from. Help!!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! I am taking classes with the University of Phoenix and this semester I have algebra. The problems is. -2/7x=6/35. ---------------
(-2/7) x= 6/35
---
x = (6/35)(-7/2)
----
You have a factor of 2 in the numerator and in the denominator.
You have a factor of 7 in the numerator and in the denominator.
--
2/2 = 1
7/7 = 1
---
So the right side can be written as:
x = (2*3)/(5*7)(-7/2)
x = (2/2)(7/7)(-3/5)
x = 1*1*-3/5
x = -3/5

x = -3/5

Hi,
*Note: As we know, there is no 'magic' in the discipline of mathematics :)
which means, there are no surprises either!

x = -42/70
Great job! getting this far.
simplifying further
x = -42/70
dividing both numerator and denominator by 2
x = -21/35
