The profits can be calculated as (Revenue - Costs).
Let's call X to the number of toys he sells. If he sells each for $3.00, the his revenue is:
Revenue+=+3X
Since the cost of each is $1.80, then the total cost is:
Cost+=+1.8X
Therefore, his profits, as a function of X, are:
Profits+=+3X+-+1.8X+=+1.2X
So now we set the profit equal to 36 and solve for X:
1.2X+=+36
X+=+36%2F1.2
X+=+30
He must sell 30 toys in order to make $36.00 in profits.
