6 1/2 - 7 can be looked at a couple of different ways.
First, think of the problem 6-7 (Now lets think in terms of integers negative and positive numbers). Subtraction is adding the opposite so that 6 - 7 is the same as 6 + (-7) = -1 (Because if we add a negative and a positive then we subtract and use the sign of the number with the larger absolute value) So we subtracted and got 1 and 7 is bigger than 6 so the answer is -1.
Now back to your problem 6 1/2 - 7= 6 1/2 + (-7).
